Position Summary
Bring your passion for social justice, strong writing skills and ability to build connections to make a lasting impact as the Associate Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations (CFR) for UCLA’s prestigious Institute of American Cultures (IAC), the central hub to four ethnic studies centers (ESC): American Indian Studies Center, Asian American Studies Center, Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies, and Chicano Studies Research Center. The IAC operates in support of the Chancellor’s Initiative to increase philanthropy for interdisciplinary research, original publications, library holdings and services, events, and community partnerships related to these centers. Your work will play a critical role in our ability to invest in faculty and student professional development activities including scholarships, graduate and post-doctoral fellowships, internships, research grants, and mentorship programs. Primary Responsibilities
With the support and direction of the Executive Director of Development for the IAC, you will manage a broad range of fundraising, communications, and research activities vital to generating corporate and foundation support for the IAC and ESCs. As the Associate Director of CFR, you will proactively engage with faculty and programs across the IAC to increase our corporate and foundation giving. You will manage a portfolio of funders and expand CFR prospect and donor pools by cultivating positive relationships between foundation and corporate representatives and faculty, programs and colleagues campus-wide including the central Office of Foundation Relations & Corporate Relations and the Office of Contract and Grant Administration. Your polished writing skills will be instrumental in crafting, editing, proofreading and preparing proposals for CFR fundraising initiatives, ensuring adherence to UCLA and respective foundation guidelines. Using your analytical and critical thinking abilities, you will also develop ways to improve the tracking and processing of grants for the IAC. Working collaboratively with the Executive Director of Development, your work will contribute to the broader mission of the UCLA Development and External Affairs. Qualifications
1. Minimum of two to three years of demonstrated experience in a grant writing, industry relations or similar role in a university, research institution or other organization of equivalent complexity with the ability to secure gifts and grants for various programs.
2. Prior experience in a grass-roots, community-based or similar type of organization to include experience with ethnic studies research and racial equity training.
3. Understanding of philanthropic principles, values and practices and knowledge of terms and resources specific to foundation and organizational fundraising.
4. Ability to conceptualize and implement corporate and foundation identification, cultivation and solicitation strategies.
5. Experience with the grant/proposal writing process.
6. Ability to use resources to discover and compile information about prospective and current funders and affiliated individuals; ability to synthesize gathered information and concepts and clearly convey value to funders.
7. Excellent written communication skills with the ability to write and edit proposals, case statements, letters of inquiry, reports and related business correspondence.
8. Strong communication skills to persuasively express the mission of the Institute of American Cultures and its affiliated Ethnic Studies Centers.
9. Detail oriented with ability to take initiative, work equally well independently and as part of a team, accept responsibility; adept at setting priorities and managing work flow to fulfill objectives and meet goals according to deadlines in a dynamic and ever-changing environment.
10. Ability to run, analyze and summarize computer-generated reports; analyze data effectively to evaluate progress; recognize areas of weakness and recommend strategies that achieve stated objectives.
11. Ability to maintain confidentiality of donor files and other information; impeccable integrity and discretion in dealing with funders, other donors, alumni, students, administrators and colleagues.
12. Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft suite of applications as well as familiarity with other database, spreadsheet, scheduling and email applications; willingness to learn new programs and applications in a prompt and efficient manner. 13. Ability to work some weekends and evenings as needed.
14. Experience with Blackbaud CRM or equivalent development database and the use of databases to generate reports is preferred.
15. Bachelor’s degree is preferred.
