Primary Responsibilities
Serving as a strong partner to the Sr. Associate Dean of External Affairs, as our Executive Director, you will develop and execute long- and short-term strategies to secure major and principal gifts from individuals, alumni, foundations and other entities in support of Anderson’s mission and strategic plan. You will manage the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major and principal gift prospects ($100,000 and up), with an emphasis on endowed chairs and other program endowments in the $500,000 to $3 million or higher range. You will develop goals and objectives for the major gifts program, manage the major gifts team, prepare annual operating plans of the unit, and evaluate progress at appropriate intervals. As our Executive Director, you will manage a portfolio of prospects as well as provide development support to several Research Centers. Working closely with the school’s Dean, Senior Associate Dean, volunteers, faculty, student, development staff and other colleagues, school and campus-wide, will enable you to gain deep knowledge and understanding of Anderson’s programs and priorities to provide the necessary leadership, assistance, advice and counsel on fundraising strategies and initiatives. In this role, you will also oversee our Annual Giving team, which includes Leadership Annual Giving, Reunion Giving, and Student/Young Alumni Giving, and plays a central role in engaging our broader community each year. Together, this group works to build meaningful connections, inspire philanthropy across all stages of the alumni journey, and strengthen the foundation of support that advances UCLA Anderson’s mission. Qualifications
1. Minimum of seven years of experience and progressive responsibility as a professional development officer or similar professional experience in a nonprofit, membership/volunteer driven or another related environment.
2. Progressively responsible experience in the design, implementation and management of complex development or comparable programs including the ability to envision and articulate future direction.
3. Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing successful cultivation and solicitation strategies and soliciting high-level major gifts and /or prior experience with solicitations of a similar nature, level and complexity.
4. Demonstrated management and leadership experience and skills to supervise fundraising officers as well as other professional and support staff.
5. Experience conceptualizing, planning and implementing special events.
6. Prior experience in a capital campaign setting is preferred.
7. Advanced knowledge of the principles and practices of major gift fundraising in a major research university or institution of equivalent complexity.
8. Outstanding interpersonal skills with the ability to build successful relationships with prospects, volunteers, board members, senior academic leadership, high-level staff campus-wide and other development staff toward the accomplishment of fundraising goals.
9. Strong ability to recruit, orient, train, organize, motivate and evaluate volunteers and staff who support development goals and programs.
10. Outstanding organizational skills with the ability to exercise initiative, establish priorities, manage multiple tasks and multi-phase projects simultaneously from inception to completion and fulfill work under tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision.
11. Ability to persuasively communication UCLA’s fundraising goals and the specific priorities of the UCLA Anderson School of management; equal ability to listen perceptively and convey awareness and sensitivity.
12. Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to produce business correspondence, solicitation materials, appropriate letters of acknowledgement, proposals to individuals, corporations and foundations, and reports.
13. Effective verbal communication skills to make persuasive oral presentations to senior management and internal/external constituencies and conduct participatory meetings; ability to gain acceptance of decisions and advise and collaborate with others.
14. Impeccable integrity and discretion in dealing with donors, alumni, students, administrators and colleagues as well as confidential information.
15. Proficiency with Microsoft Suite of applications is required as is familiarity with other applications, programs and databases as needed with a willingness to learn new technologies.
16. Some travel required.
17. Ability to work evenings and/or weekends as needed.
18. Master’s/Advanced degree is preferred.
