 Position Summary
Although the UCLA School of Dentistry was established in 1964 and may be fairly young, its achievements and accolades rival, and even surpass, those of other research intensive dental schools that have been around for more than a century.  Since its inception, the School has focused on achieving and maintaining excellence in the four main areas of providing a comprehensive dental education, cutting-edge research, quality patient care and a commitment to public services.  Philanthropy and the ability to raise funds for these four main areas of focus, along with the School’s dedicated and talented students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends, have propelled the School of Dentistry to being one of the premier dental schools on the national and international stage.  Strong leadership and the generosity of donors enables the continuation of these achievements for generations to come.

 Primary Responsibilities

Reporting jointly to the Dean of the School of Dentistry and the Senior Executive Director, Health Sciences Development, as the Executive Director of Development and Alumni Relations, School of Dentistry, you will oversee the entire range of development and alumni relations for the school.  You will establish long-range goals and objectives for the development programs and activities that reflect funding priorities of the school and will design and implement a comprehensive and integrated development program, addressing the specific needs and academic priorities of the school. In conjunction with the Dean and Senior Executive Director, Health Sciences Development, as the Executive Director, you will maintain progress in meeting proposed annual fundraising goals, priorities, planning and strategy.  You will plan, manage and direct efforts to attract private support from individuals, corporations, foundations and other organizations. As the Executive Director, you will lead activities in the areas of special events, volunteer and board management.  You will also oversee activities for the school’s alumni relations efforts, be responsible for the development and implementation of strategic events, programs and initiatives designed to achieve the School of Dentistry’s goals and will represent the Dean, the school, and UCLA to donors and to the wider community across a range of public settings. 





Qualifications
1. Minimum of seven years of experience and progressive responsibility as a professional development officer or similar professional experience in a nonprofit, membership/volunteer driven or other related environment.

2. Progressively responsible experience in the design, implementation and management of complex development or comparable programs including the ability to envision and articulate future direction.

3. Demonstrated experience in developing successful cultivation and solicitation strategies and soliciting high-level major gifts and/or prior experience with solicitations of a similar nature, level and complexity.

4. Excellent donor, alumni relations or similar constituent based- relationship skills with expert knowledge of the principles and practices of major gift fundraising in a major research university or institution of equivalent complexity.

5. Appropriate management and administrative skills needed to organize, direct, motivate and evaluate other professionals and volunteers. Strong supervisory skills to oversee and evaluate the efforts of professional fundraisers.

6. Excellent communication skills to express, both verbally and in writing, the mission of the University and the fund-raising goals of the campus, especially as they relate to the School of Dentistry.

7. Excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively with the Dean, faculty, and administration; central development; major donor prospects; and volunteers.

8. Effective verbal communication skills to make persuasive oral presentations to senior management and internal and external constituencies conduct participatory meetings; gain acceptance of decisions and advise and collaborate with others.

9. Exceptional interpersonal skills to interact effectively with academic leaders, faculty, staff, donors and volunteers.

10. Strong strategic thinking skills aligned with the ability to implement and follow through.

11. Steadfast commitment to work of impeccable integrity with strong analytical and organizational skills to develop creative, credible solutions, recommendations and programs as well as to define and implement special fundraising and/or program related projects.

12. Some travel and ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.

13. Master’s degree is preferred.
