Position Summary

As a Director of Gift Planning, your work will make a significant impact in ensuring that our donors’ philanthropy not only maximizes tax benefits and income for life, but also creates a legacy that will make a difference in areas important to them. As a member of UCLA’s Office of Gift Planning, you will become part of a dynamic, collaborative and innovative team that offers long-term opportunities for personal and professional development as part of our robust External Affairs enterprise serving UCLA.
Primary Responsibilities
In this role, you will qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward planned giving donors to increase individual gifts to programs campus-wide, as well as assist in growing the overall donor base. You will develop and execute long- and short-term strategies to secure both planned and major gifts from individuals in support of the University's mission and strategic plan. You will serve as a resource to unit-based Directors of Development and other External Affairs and will work collaboratively with colleagues across campus to enhance the pool of planned and major donor prospects. Your knowledge and experience of gift planning will assist development professionals across campus in planned giving arrangements, technical information and gift planning strategies. **Please note, this is a hybrid position.**
Qualifications
1. Minimum of three years of experience as a gift planning professional, ideally in a higher education or medical setting, or related field working with outright gifts, deferred gift arrangements and experience with a wide variety of assets, i.e., real estate, securities, closely held stock, tangible personal property.
2. Knowledge and experience in utilizing all mechanisms of outright and deferred gift plans offered at UCLA and any combination thereof is preferred.
3. Working knowledge of the principles and practices of fund-raising in a university setting with a strong understanding of the goals, functions and services of a research university or institution of equivalent complexity.
4. Broad and thorough knowledge of the principles of tax-encouraged philanthropy and knowledge of current pertinent tax laws and other legislation affecting the charitable sector to determine its impact upon gifts from individuals.
5. Ability to conceptualize and implement a variety of complex development or comparable programs and activities.
6. Skill in and/or ability to develop and implement sophisticated strategies for successful cultivation and solicitation of major, planned and principal gifts – outright and/or life income arrangements or other transactions of a similar nature, level and complexity.
7. Excellent written communication skills with the ability to produce proposals for planned gifts or comparable solicitations and a variety of marketing materials as needed.
8. Strong communication skills to persuasively express both orally and in writing the mission of UCLA, the Health Sciences and related fund-raising goals, as well as complex principles of tax-encouraged philanthropy.
9.Excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively and cooperatively with other development professionals, deans, senior faculty and administrators, professional advisors, donors and volunteers.
10. Ability to establish priorities; manage multiple tasks and multi-phase projects simultaneously from inception to completion; and complete work under tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment with minimum supervision.
11. Strong ability to recruit, orient, train, organize, motivate and evaluate the efforts of volunteers and support staff to fulfill goals and objectives.
12. Impeccable integrity and discretion in dealing with donors, alumni, students, administrators and colleagues as well as confidential information.
13. Knowledge of Microsoft suite of applications as well as familiarity with other applications, programs and databases as needed with a willingness to learn new technologies.
Ability to work some weekends and evenings as needed.
Bachelor’s degree is preferred.
