Position Summary
Under the direction of a Director of Development, Physical Sciences, in the College of Letters and Science, and in consultation with the Dean, establish long-range goals and objectives for development programs and activities that reflect the academic priorities of the College of Letters and Science.
Primary Responsibilities
Determine market feasibility for academic priorities and provide advice and counsel to the Dean, in collaboration with other members of the College development team. Engage high-level volunteers to provide community linkage to development programs and to assist with specific solicitations and other programmatic elements as necessary. Meet with faculty in priority areas and gain knowledge of research interests and areas of expertise. Serve as a staff resource to the Dean and represent the College and its divisions to the broader community. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with appropriate individuals and offices in the College of Letters and Science and External Affairs. Use available data to develop constituencies and identify prospects in relation to academic priorities. Organize and conduct meetings of volunteers and donors designed to identify new prospective donors for private support. Identify a core group of prospective donors for major gifts and maintain active awareness of individuals in the prospect pool at various stages of identification, cultivation and solicitation. Strategically plan, prepare for and participate in major gift solicitations.
Qualifications
1. Progressive responsibility and experience as a professional development officer.
2. Working knowledge of principles and practices of major gift fundraising in a major research university.
3. Supervisory skills to provide direction, guidance and training to support staff.
4. Ability to organize, direct, motivate and evaluate the efforts of volunteers.
5. Strong communication skills to express, both orally and in writing, the mission of the University and the fundraising goals of the campus, especially as they relate to the College.
6. Interpersonal skills to work harmoniously with other staff, academic leaders, faculty, community leaders, donors and volunteers.
7. Ability to take initiative and work independently.
8. (A) Familiarity with word-processing, database, spreadsheet, scheduling and email applications; (B) willingness to learn new programs and applications as needed; (C) knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Access preferred.
9. Working knowledge of PMATS (Prospect Management and Tracking System) and Advance donor database.
10. Ability to run, analyze and summarize computer-generated reports.
11. Ability to work some weekends and evenings as needed.
12. Demonstrated ability to conceptualize and implement individual, corporate and foundation identification, cultivation and solicitation strategies.
13. Strong ability to set priorities and manage work flow to fulfill objectives and meet goals according to deadlines in a high-paced work environment.
14. Excellent written and communication skills, with the ability to produce business correspondence, solicitation materials, appropriate letters of acknowledgement, proposals to individuals, corporations and foundations, and reports.
15. Skill in analyzing information to define problems and objectives.
16. Strong ability to recruit, orient, train, organize, motivate and evaluate staff and volunteers who support development goals and programs.
17. Experience conceptualizing, planning and implementing special events.
