Position Summary
The Executive Director of Major and Planned Gifts is responsible for the vision, leadership and overall execution of the university's central major gifts and gift planning programs. The Executive Director is accountable for programs and methods that identify, cultivate, solicit and steward individuals interested in support of the University, Professional Schools, College and program priorities campus-wide. Establish goals for both the Major Gifts and Gift Planning teams, as well as evaluate and analyze marketing and data results to enhance qualifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding major gift donors ($100,000+). Promote collaboration among central and unit-based staff and promote gift planning in all principal gift discussions.
Primary Responsibilities
The Executive Director will provide leadership to a service-oriented model in support of unit fundraising efforts, including providing advice and counsel to deans and academic leadership. Oversee and manage the university's regional programs emphasizing increased alumni engagement and fundraising objectives. Coordinate, guide, and monitor the programs of all campus development units with regard to regional prospect identification. The Executive Director is a senior development officer, managing a caseload of 60+ prospects and donors. Serve as a member of the Development Senior Management team and as such advises the Senior Staff and academic leadership on strategic direction and policy decisions related to Major and Gift Planning and Regional efforts. Participate in the planning, goal-setting and execution of the university's upcoming comprehensive Campaign. Responsible for departmental administration of budget, policies and procedures including gift and estate administration. Hire and supervise staff focusing on issues of organization, direction, evaluation and motivation. In addition, maintain excellent working relationships with Finance and Information Management, Human Resources, Communications, unit-based development teams, and academic leaders to foster and enhance understanding and knowledge of Major and Planned Giving.
Qualifications
1. Seven or more years of successful major planned giving or development experience, or related experience in planned giving is required.
2. Strong leadership qualities, including the ability to provide direction and motivation to others through communication, personal integrity, optimism and high achievement, thereby inspiring confidence and trust.
3. Significant and increasingly responsible experience managing a successful department, ideally in higher education. A solid history of staff and volunteer recruitment, development, training, and mentoring.
4. Strong data analysis skills with the ability to create data manipulation instructions for IT staff and outside vendors.
5. Understanding of academic environment or other complex organization is preferred.
6. Strong organizational skills, including a commitment to and track record in both strategic and operational planning.
7. The ability to work collegially and collaboratively in a team setting.
8. Judgment, decisiveness, optimism, resilience, energy, and creativity.
9. Bachelor's degree and advanced degree preferred.
